“Mary is one of the best actresses I’ve ever met,” Dorfman said. “I still remember seeing her on stage in 1992 in ‘Mad Forest’ off-Broadway. She was electric, funny, and a real individual. Everyone loved her. She will be very missed.”
The actress’s body was discovered Sunday morning after she apparently drowned while swimming in St. Lawrence in Cape Vincent, New York, according to an announcement from the New York State Police, who noted that an investigation is ongoing.
According to a press release from the New York State Police, officers responded to a call around 8:10 a.m. local time on Sunday about a “possibility of drowning.” Cape Vincent firefighters and ambulances arrived at the scene and “found a woman dead in the St. Lawrence River,” the statement said.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim drowned while swimming,” police said.
Police added in their statement there was no sign of foul play. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death, according to police.

Mara is survived by her stepdaughter, Catie Mersola; her sister, Martha Mara; her sister and brother-in-law, Susan Mara and Scott Dailey; and grandson, Christopher Dailey.
